Preschool Pressure

I always say my kids were homeschooled from birth, because they never went to school and they were learning from the day they were born. Yet I didn’t “school” them during the years from birth to age 5; we certainly did a lot - played inside and outside, made crafts, painted, colored, I read to them - but I never considered that homeschooling.

That’s why I was bewildered when I first noticed the trend of mums joining homeschool support groups even though their children were under five years old. I wondered, ‘what’s their hurry?’

It might seem like an extravagant claim; that all children can learn to read and write to very high levels of competence. However, I believe that existing research shows how to do just that.

Phonological Awareness: The Essential Prerequisite in Learning to Read.

Over the years many myths have developed about how to teach reading. One of the most influential and misleading of these myths involved the issue of decoding. Written text is in the form of a code for spoken language. The process of reading requires the reader to ‘crack the code’ or decode the text.
