Science Sessions at Deakin

Posted on November 9th, 2006 in Events

Dr John Long, Senior Lecturer with the School of Engineering and Information Technology Department at Deakin University has arranged the following science sessions for us on Thursday 30th November

Practical Sessions for Home-Educated Students
Deakin University at Geelong Waurn Ponds offers 2 different, simultaneous practical sessions for middle and high-school aged home ed students associated with the Home Education Network.

Date: Thursday 30 November 2006.

Session 1: Chemistry: the Forensic Detective
The School of Life and Environmental Sciences offers a 2.5-3-hour chemistry session with a focus on forensic science.
Time: 9:30 AM for a 10 AM start. Finish by 1 PM.
Cost: $10 per student, cash on the day.
Ages: 14-18. The minimum age of 14 strictly applies.
Strictly limited to 36 students maximum.
Lab coats and goggles will be provided. Students must wear closed-toed shoes for lab safety. Sneakers are OK, but not Ugg boots.

Session 2: Basic Electronics
The School of Engineering and Information Technology offers a 2.5-hour session in basic electronics.
Time: 9:45 AM for a 10:15 start. Finish by 1 PM.
Cost: $10 per student, cash on the day.
Ages: 10-13.
Limited to 25 students per day.
Students (and parents) must wear closed-toed shoes for lab safety. Sneakers are OK, but not Ugg boots. The two sessions overlap to make travel more convenient for families.

The simultaneous sessions caters for families with both older and younger children. The younger ones do electronics with John, and the older ones do chemistry in a nearby building. Families with children in only one age group may elect to participate in the activity for their age group.

We will meet outside Engineering at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds Campus. Directions and a map will be made available for those booking.

John has been working on a proposal to assist home educated students to access Deakin university and will speak to the parents on how his proposal is going during the sessions as well as investigating activities for next year.

Wildlife / Dolphin Cruise

6 November 2006
9:00 am

As part of the Portsea Camp we have arranged a cruise on the Polperro on Monday 6th November. Although the exact trip will depend on the weather, we are planning to leave from Sorrento Pier at visit bird nesting sites, Popes Eye, seals and probably encounter dolphins and other wildlife. The aboriginal history of the bay and Victoria’s settlement by whites, the Quarantine Station, the fortifications etc will be discussed. The cruise will go for about 2 hours. We are being offered a big discount on the normal pricing to help make it accessible to families. Please contact Brenda on 5988-0503 by Friday 3rd November if you are interested.

Judy Muir from Polperro Dolphin Swims is also going to give a talk at the Portsea Home Ed camp on Sunday evening.

Information about the Polperro Dolphin Swims is available on their website: http://www.polperro.com.au/

Video Camera Course

Posted on November 5th, 2006 in Event Calendar
5 November 2006
2:00 pm

As part of the Portsea Camp, Ian Colquhoun is offering a 2 hour session about using a Video Camera. It will cover basic uses and abuses of a videocamera both for general use and specifically aimed at documentary videography, which is, after all, the most common use for a videocamera. Participation should be secondary school age (younger kids need a different approach).

When: Sunday 5th November from 2pm to 4 pm.
Where: Portsea Camp
Cost: $20 - $25

(depending on the number that decide to attend)
If you are not staying at the Portsea Camp you will also need to pay the $5 day access fee (you might consider coming for the whole day and staying for the slide talk in the evening by Judy Muir at 8pm.)

There would be 2 components to the Video Camera Course: technical & aesthetic.

Technical aspects include light temperatures, white balancing, use of a tripod, techniques for hand-holding, lighting and sound, focus & shooting to edit.

Aesthetic details include basic documentary style, telling the story, what makes a good documentary, what questions to ask & how to ask them and how to think about documentaries, editing styles, setting a mood.

If participants have access to a video camera it would be to their advantage to bring it along but is not strictly necessary as I will bring my own. However, it would be desirable if participants could watch at least one and preferably more than one documentary before the day. No specific documentary required, but different types would be good so that I can refer to styles and ask them questions.

Please contact Brenda on 5988-0503 or webmaster@home-ed.vic.edu.au if you are interested in attending.
