National Curriculum

Written By: susan wight - Jun• 04•09

Work on a National Curriculum is proceeding with an aim to roll out part one in 2011.

More information is now available as several discussion papers are available for public feedback. These can be accessed online here http://www.ncb.org.au/communications/publications.html

It is not yet clear what effect a national curriculum would have on home educators but we advise home educators to be informed.

Would the forcing of this upon home educators be an infringement on our right to choose? We will have pulled or kept our children from a system that does not work for them only to have it forced up them. Sounds a little like a dictatorship to me.

    Hi Alexandra,

Yes, I do think being forced to use a national curriculum would be an infringement of our rights as parents. We do have the right to choose the type of education our children receive.

At this stage we don’t know whether all schools and home educators will be asked to use the national curriculum, just that there is going to be one.

Forcing a national curriculum on home schooling parent would be rather difficult. Monitoring would have to be increased to start with. We might like to view a national curriculum as a skeleton which still allows us to do it our way.
