As limited seating is available for parents, children may have to work without parent’s presence. The venue has ample parking and is within walking distance from Highett railway station & shops. It is a short drive to Southland Shopping Centre. There is an outdoor area for younger children & parents to wait.

Minibeasts & Miniworlds (code Y6) 11am-12pm

Minibeasts and Miniworlds is an exploration of the wonderful world of minibeasts and their surroundings.
The program features live minibeasts, bizarre and beautiful specimens and exciting activities. Through observing, thinking and doing, students identify similarities and differences in  structure, form and function and thus develop a greater understanding of invertebrate diversity, life cycles and food chains.
Through hands-on activities and demonstrations, students explore microscopic life in a drop of water, the role of insects in the food chain, insect body parts and other structures and functions, insect eyes, camouflage and sounds, insect diversity and classification and the lifecycle stages of live mealworms. Suitable for prep to grade 4.

Forensic Frenzy (code JS7) 11am-12.30pm
$10 members $12 non-members
Students assume the role of forensic scientists to solve a crime. Students undertake a number of practical investigations and use a variety of strategies to solve the crime, including chromatography techniques, facial identification, fingerprint comparison, soil analysis, dental x-rays, blood stain investigation, fabric and fibre analysis.
The scenario for the crime is introduced and the students are shown the experiments. Students are issued with a logbook in which they record their findings. There are 13 activities. Students work in groups of two or three. Each group of students is not expected to complete all of the experiments but all activities will be covered by the class. The data from the groups is collated by the class and students use the evidence to try to solve the problem. It is expected that they will report their findings to the class and write a report.
WARNING: there is (animal) blood & a kidnap & murder scenario! Suitable for grade 5 (strictly) to grade 10.
