(Also known as a Victorian Public Transport Card)

Children up to the age of their 17th birthday are not required to have a student concession card when travelling on a concession fare on public transport. However, any child who is travelling on a concession fare may be required to provide proof of age upon request by an authorised officer or public transport staff (bus or coach driver, V/Line train conductor, station staff, etc.). For proof-of-age purposes some students, including home schooled students, choose to buy a student concession card.

A home schooled student who wants to buy a public transport concession card can do so either in person or by post. Application forms are available from Premium public transport outlets, or they can be downloaded from the Metlink website at www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/fares_tickets/concessions/students

Applying in person

Applications submitted in person should consist of a:

• completed student concession card application form (including two passport-size photographs)

• photocopy of the student’s current VRQA home schooling notification letter

• $9 processing fee.

Applications should be taken to the MetShop at the Melbourne Town Hall, corner of Swanston and Little Collins Streets, Melbourne. The concession card application will be processed and a valid Victorian Public Transport Concession Card will be issued on the spot.

Applying via mail

Applications submitted by mail should consist of a:

• completed student concession card application form (including two passport-size photographs)

• photocopy of the student’s current VRQA home-schooling notification letter

• $9 processing fee (money order or bank cheque only)

• stamped self-addressed envelope for postage of the completed concession card.

Applications should be mailed to:

METLINK (Attention: The MetShop)
PO Box 4693TT
Melbourne 3001

Allow up to 14 days for processing. For more information, contact Metlink by telephone on (03) 131 638 or visit www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au

Note: Metlink Student Concession Cards for registered home-schooling students will not be processed over the counter at metropolitan and/or V/Line railway stations or other Metlink retail outlets.

For interstate home educators, refer to your local home ed organisation or the international student card ISIC may be suitable for you http://www.isiccard.com.au/index.html

Victorian Student Pass
Once a student holds a transport concession card they may also purchase a Student Pass which is a more economical option for those who travel regularly. If your local VLine office doesn’t think you are eligible, get them to phone the Metlink office or just pop into Metlink when you are in Melbourne, show your concession card and they’ll sell you a Student Pass.

The Victorian Student Pass gives you unlimited travel on metropolitan trains, trams and buses, on all regional town bus services and all V/Line train and coach services operating wholly within Victoria. Cost $220 for half yearly pass or $422 for full yearly pass.
