A packaged curriculum is not necessary to home educate successfully but there are many options available for those who wish to use one. Time spent thinking about what you and your children wish to learn and what best suits their style of learning before buying anything will be rewarded. Cheap mistakes are easier to back away from than expensive ones and some families later regret having outlaid a large sum of money on a curriculum which was not right for them. It is worth reading a variety of books about ways of home educating before making these decisions. A list of recommended titles can be found in the books section.
If you choose to use a curriculum, you may not need to buy a whole package new. Try your library, second hand book store and the Internet. Consider borrowing some materials from a friend before you buy to check if they suit your family. Keep in mind your own bookshelf, your local bookshop and even your newsagent. You can draw on material from the Internet, encyclopedias, CD-ROMs, community courses, libraries, museums, special interest groups clubs, friends willing to share skills and many other things that may be available in your area.
This list is only a starting point to the many resources available.

Climate Science - The Skeptical Science website is an excellent resource on climate change, especially useful when you need accurate information to combat denialist arguments. Scientific skepticism is healthy. In fact, science by its very nature is skeptical. Genuine skepticism means considering the full body of evidence before coming to a conclusion. However, when you take a close look at arguments expressing climate ‘skepticism’, what you often observe is cherry picking of pieces of evidence while rejecting any data that don’t fit the desired picture. This isn’t skepticism. It is ignoring facts and the science. The free downloadable booklet, The Scientific Guide to Global Warming Skepticism looks at both the evidence that human activity is causing global warming and the ways that climate ‘skeptic’ arguments can mislead by presenting only small pieces of the puzzle rather than the full picture.
Astronomy – Star Guide
Professor Watson, Astronomer in Charge at the Anglo-Australian Telescope in northwest NSW, has recorded an audio tour of the sky.
This can be downloaded from the ABC website at http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2010/01/06/2771371.htm , along with southern sky maps for January, February and March. “Using an MP3 player to guide you through the night sky is a great way to find constellations without the distraction of a flashlight and star-maps,” says Professor Watson. “Once you’ve got to know a few of the brighter stars, it’s relatively easy to find your way around the sky.”
Head of the Class http://www.theHeadoftheClass.com has hundreds of free worksheets for lower primary and preschoolers. Remember to use the quotation marks to refine your search to exactly what you need. Also, if you are looking for something in maths, remember that Americans spell it “math” so if you are not having any luck with “maths”, try adjusting your spelling.
